The Lunar Expedition
*Usagi grabbed a plate of cookies her mother had made a few minutes ago and plopped down in front of the television. She munched happily on the still-warm sugar cookies and pulled the remote control towards her with her toe, leaning over to grab it with sticky fingers. Her mother said something about the sleepoever at Ami's later. Usagi flipped through some channels. The walls flashed green, then pink, then green again as various soap operas, anime, and nature channels flashed across the screen. Usagi mechanically lifted each cookie to her lips, staring at the television screen. She wasn't really paying attention to what was right in front of her, instead focusing on what she would have to do that afternoon.
First she had to pack for a sleepover at Ami's house. A toothbrush, pajamas, the bunny stuffed animal that Mamoru had bought her the year before, hair brush, shampoo and conditioner, cell phone with the crescent moon charm, her transmitter, socks… was there anything else? Then there was the Senshi meeting scheduled for an hour or so before bedtime. That meant she'd have roughly two hours in which to attempt, however futilely, some of the mounting homework she had been putting off thus far. She also had to find some time to talk to her parents about getting a part-time job since she wasn't too happy about her allowance. She dreaded this, fairly sure that it wouldn't happen on a basis of time alone. She also had to look into some extra training and replacements for patrolling since there hadn't been any attacks from any youma lately and that usually meant something pretty bad was eventually going to happen.
Some other little thoughts passed through her mind as she zoned out further, ignoring the television even as she held the remote control limply. She even stopped nibbling on the cookie in her hand, instead pressing it against her bottom lip when the news came on. There was some kind of event going on that looked so completely boring, she normally would have just skipped over it if she had been paying attention. The only time she watched the news was when some dark energy queen/king decided to destroy the Earth and she had to watch for signs of destruction. She started to retort that she did pay attention to the news, sometimes.
The screen changed to show a group of four people walking towards a space shuttle. A woman, drowned in the heavy astronaut suit, made a peace sign at the camera. The camera angle changed again to show the anchor speaking.
"Scientists have not disclosed pictures of the supposed questionable clues found on the moon which have sparked their sudden interest in this area, but the media has been assured that when something substantial is found, the public will be informed of their discoveries. What mysterious does the moon still hold? Are there signs of life which we have not discovered yet which will lead us to breakthroughs in theories about how life was created in the universe? We may never know. Until we receive more information, this is Kira Yskine reporting."
Usagi frowned thoughtfully as she leaned back, munching on a cookie. What could scientists find that would make news reports? Usually they kept their discoveries for people who actually cared about such things. She knew that scientists made discoveries all the time about the moon and surrounding planets that broke new ground in scientific research but that the general public usually found boring. Just because they'd found evidence of iron in one of their rocks didn't mean people understood why that was important. It was the big discoveries, such as evidence of ice on Mars for example, that attracted media attention because it suggested that life could have existed. At least, that's the way Luna had always explained it to her.
Usagi stood up, once realizing her plate of cookies had vanished. She waltzed upstairs to her bedroom and began packing everything mentioned earlier. She came back down stairs and told her mom goodbye and soon left to go to Ami's.

**Clair was just finishing up some reports when a fellow scientist knocked on her office door. "Come in." A older looking man stepped in. "Ms. Harley, they have discovered that the samples you have brought back are not of the same as what you have brought back on previous missions." Clair rised out of her seat. "Is that so?" she asked. The man nodded. "Maybe you should have a look for yourself, I need to get back to work." he then exited the room.
Clair walked out of her office and straight down the hall to hanger F-9 where the labs were. She entered lab 207 and was not surprised to find a cluster of scientics hanging over top a microscope to get a closer look at the 'rocks'. She grabbed her clipboard out of her lab coat pocket and edge her way through the crowed. "Oh, excuse me, Pardon, I need to get through." Once clear and up to the microscope, she took out her pen and began to jot down notes. "If you don't mind, professor, could I take these samples down to the investigation department?" she asked politely. He agreed and Clair carefully had the specimens transported to another section of the building.
It had only been a week since their discovery on the Moon and already word was getting out about it. She understood that the public needs to be aware of these things but this always had its up and downs. The lab was always crawling with news reporters and the government always want to assign scientits to some fake important mission. Clair thought about all the posibilites to what she had seen that day. The samples her squad had taken were from a pile of rocks that looked more like ruins in rome. It was actually quite breath taking on the dark side of the moon. Though, logically without her space suit, there would be no breath.
Clair was curious, what exactly so special about these particular rocks that the public had to know about it so quickly? She was puzzled before but once the man told her that they were no ordinary space rocks Clair was starting to wonder. Did this mean they meant there had been life on the moon? Was it a precious metal or gem? She wasn't too sure but all she knew was that this was big and hoped it wouldn't get out of hand.
So down in the investigation department, professors, scientists, and even a few doctors were snooping around trying to get their hands on these samples. Clair shooed them away and took the rocks into a private room. Here she held the rock under a slightly larger microscope and took a scapel to it. The rock was just slightly larger than her entire hand and was almost cylinder like. She shaved off a couple of pieces and placed it between two glass microscope slides. Then she made her way over to a cabinet and pulled out another sample labeled 'Moon rock 12'. She placed them both under the microscope and made observations.
The Moon rock was much more darker and thick. From memory, Clair recalls the Moon rock being much hard to scrape than the unknown rock sample. Thats when she got the idea to chisel the sample. This attempt may ruin a perfect specimen and she may get in alot of trouble but, Clair was much too confident. As she removed layers and layers of the rock, she started to notice a change in color in the rock. She broke off more and more. She hadn't even been paying attention to what was in her hand, she just continued removing more rock. Before she knew it it was all gone and all that was left was a white pedistal looking piece. She was amazed. The rock around it acted much like rust on earth! Except she wasn't exactly sure what this was, she'd call it Lunara. She labeled the glass slide.
Clair put the materials in a separate cabinet and locked it up tight. She went down the the main office. "Sir, I'd like to for you to ask the finest and most highly recommended scientists and astronuats to be assigned to this particular study of mine. I believe there was one life on the Moon and traces of the people have been left behind."

***Yuichiro was sweeping outside the temple. He got around front, close enough to hear what was going inside. He leaned up against the temple wall and sighed out of exaustion. Grampa had been having him do more work that usual today and for no particular reason either That old dude just loves to get kicks out of everything. Yuichiro relaxed and heard the television was on in the family room. There was some sort of news report. News, he hated the news it was always so hard to understand and it never interested him. But right now it was just about the only thing to entertain him at the moment. He would just listen to the lady ramble on until the sport updates came on.
The woman talked about some sort of new discovery on the Moon. He didn't really understand and figured it was just about some dumb rock or spaceship, maybe a new star. Thats when he remembered that whenever Rei's friend where over and the news was about space they all paid attention. Thats when he had the idea to go find Rei and tell her abou the story that was on. Maybe it would give him a chance to talk to her, he thought. So Yuichiro went searching the temple grounds for her.
